Building the Operating System for the AI-Native Law Firm
Kānāwai: (Hawaiian) law, code, rule, statute, or regulation
Kanawai AI provides the new operational infrastructure for the AI-native law firm.
Our Story
For decades, the legal industry has been trapped in a zero-sum game of human capital. As caseloads grew, firms had no choice but to throw more billable hours, more paralegals, and more administrative overhead at the problem. The "legal tech" boom promised to fix this, but instead delivered a fragmented landscape of disconnected point solutions—a drafting tool here, an E-Discovery plug-in there—leaving the core operational bottlenecks untouched.
Kanawai AI was co-founded by Nicolle Cumberland and Rob Waters, who worked together for four years at Google. They founded Kanawai AI on a different premise: Law firms don't need more apps; they need a new operational infrastructure.
Our vision is to power the future of the AI-Native Law Firm. We are building the definitive end-to-end legal production engine—a unified platform where case ingestion, proprietary document taxonomy, E-Discovery, and settlement drafting flow seamlessly on a single, intelligent chassis.
Our Proven Advantage: We've Done This Before
Kanawai AI is led by a team of co-founders with deep expertise in legal, AI, and cybersecurity systems. We bring a combined decade-plus of leadership and engineering experience from Google. Our Board of Directors includes attorneys with decades of experience in Workers' Compensation law and supporting the U.S. Government.
During our tenure in Big Tech, we specialized in designing, scaling, and deploying advanced AI and automation systems for some of the world’s most highly regulated industries—including financial services, healthcare, and the U.S. Government. We know what it takes to build AI that doesn't just generate text, but securely manages mission-critical, highly sensitive data at an enterprise scale. Data isolation and compliance are in our DNA.
We left Big Tech because we saw a massive arbitrage opportunity in the legal sector. We realized that by applying the rigorous data structuring, scalable architecture, and security compliance of Silicon Valley to the fragmented legal market, we could fundamentally rewrite the unit economics of a law firm.
How We Are Fundamentally Different
We Are an Infrastructure, Not a Feature: We replace the messy, siloed legacy legal tools. From the moment a raw medical record or messy email chain is ingested, our AI structures it into a proprietary taxonomy, extracts the vital facts, and integrates those insights directly into your firm's knowledge base on Kanawai AI.
The "Proving Ground" Advantage
We aren't just another software vendor or legal tool with AI capabilities; we operate an AI-native law firm using our own technology. By processing complex, high-volume cases on our own platform, we have battle-tested our infrastructure.
Zero-Friction Adoption
Technology is only valuable if lawyers actually use it. By integrating our infrastructure directly into the firm's existing environments, we eliminate the change-management friction that kills traditional legal tech deployments.
But we don't stop there. Our Document Management System is the backbone of your firm's intelligence. We automate Case File ingestion, perform predictive case valuations, post-settlement operations, and automated billing.
By eliminating manual toil and bottlenecks that plague every stage of the legal lifecycle, we enable firms to scale their operations without proportionally increasing their expenses.
Built for Growth
Our architecture is inherently designed for the AI-native law firm model. When a firm grows, Kanawai AI allows for the seamless integration of new attorneys, cases, and data, ensuring that the firm's knowledge base grows with it.
Our Goal
Our goal is simple: to make the practice of law infinitely scalable and highly profitable. By institutionalizing a firm's knowledge, predicting case valuations through data, and automating the bottom 80% of routine legal workflows, Kanawai AI frees attorneys to focus purely on high-level legal strategy and client advocacy.
We are not just changing how lawyers work. We are changing what a law firm is worth.
