Our Story

For decades, the legal industry has been trapped in a zero-sum game of human capital. The "legal tech" boom promised to fix this, but instead delivered a fragmented landscape of disconnected point solutions—a drafting tool here, an E-Discovery plug-in there—leaving the core operational bottlenecks untouched.

Kanawai AI was co-founded by Nicolle Cumberland and Rob Waters, who worked together for four years at Google. They founded Kanawai AI on a different premise: Law firms don't need more apps; they need a new operational infrastructure.

Kanawai AI is led by a team of co-founders with deep expertise in legal, AI, and cybersecurity systems. We bring a combined decade-plus of leadership and engineering experience from Google. Our Board of Directors includes attorneys with decades of experience in Workers' Compensation law and supporting the U.S. Government.

During our tenure in Big Tech, we specialized in designing, scaling, and deploying advanced AI and automation systems for some of the world’s most highly regulated industries—including financial services, healthcare, and the U.S. Government. We know what it takes to build AI that doesn't just generate text, but securely manages mission-critical, highly sensitive data at an enterprise scale. Data isolation and compliance are in our DNA.

We left Big Tech because we saw a massive arbitrage opportunity in the legal sector. We realized that by applying the rigorous data structuring, scalable architecture, and security compliance of Silicon Valley to the fragmented legal market, we could fundamentally rewrite the unit economics of a law firm.
